Tea Tree Essential Oil

teatreeTea Tree Oil is a powerful antiseptic and helps clear up many skin diseases.  It is also seen as an antibiotic and used for a wide range of fungal, viral and bacterial infections.  It is a fairly safe oil to use but may cause sensitization in some individuals.

For those of us who have kids in school – it is Head Lice season.  In my kids first week of school we already received a notice that someone has head lice in the class and that we need to check our kids hair on a regular basis.  Here’s a little trick from the trade, dab a little tea tree oil (diluted) behind the ears or place approximately 10 drops of oil in a detangling conditioner and spray it in their hair before they go to school.  According to the Head Lice Squad – lice do not like tea tree oil!

Listed below are some of the aromatherapy uses of Tea Tree Oil;

  • Anti-infectious – combats infection or its spread
  • Anti-inflammatory – relieves or alleviates inflammation
  • Antiseptic – destroys or controls pathogenic bacteria
  • Antiviral – inhibits the growth of viruses
  • Balsamic – soothing and healing
  • Bactericidal – prevents the growth of/or destroys bacteria
  • Cicatrizant – promotes healing through the formation of scar tissue
  • Diaphoretic – producing or increasing perspiration
  • Expectorant – helps to expel mucus from respiratory system
  • Fungicidal – resists or destroys fungal infections
  • Immuno-Stimulant – increases the action of the immune system
  • Parasiticide – destroys parasites
  • Vulnerary – promotes healing of wounds & prevents tissue degeneration

CFA Fall Retreat

loyolaFor those of you who were able to enjoy a wonderful relaxing and exhilarating weekend up at Loyola House (Ignatius Jesuit Centre of Guelph) on behalf of the Canadian Federation of Aromatherapists – Welcome Back!

Clearly Essentials was happy to supply a small sample of our essential oils and our “Spirit” blend.  If you are reading this – you’ve had a chance to use them or are just a little curious about us.

We chose to give you a sample of our Organic Lavender because it is a popular essential oil and most versatile.  It is also one of the safest of essential oils and is used for uplifting your spirit (relaxation), easing your mind (calms emotional anxiety) and healing your body (irritated skin, sore muscles, respiratory or digestive).   Lavender’s  odor profile is a wonderful  sweet, floral, herbaceous and balsamic woody fragrance.

Our second choice was Organic Bergamot for it’s refreshing odor profile of rich, sweet-fruity smell followed by herbaceous balsamic notes which makes it a uplifting, sunny fragrance.  Bergamot should be avoided if you have sensitive skin and is phototoxic.  It is used for uplifting your spirit (relaxation), easing your mind (calms emotional anxiety, antidepressant) and healing your body (problem skin, calms muscles, respiratory or digestive).

Clearly Essentials can provide blended oils as well so if there is a particular fragrance you are looking for we would be more the happy to help.

Since we just now starting to offer our essential oils to the general public, we would love to hear from you so write us or just browse our website.  Thanks!

Handling & Storing of Essential Oils

Essential oils are highly volatile substances that evaporate readily and are all inflammable.

h3That’s why Clearly Essentials Limited supplies essential oils in dark glass bottles as heat, air and light can affect them.  So please store your essential oils in a cool dark place with the lid tightly sealed to prevent evaporation.  Remember that once the bottle is opened constantly the oxidation process begins and therefore you will get a reduction of therapeutic properties over time.

It depends on the essential oil but most will deteriorate slowly over a couple of years.  Citrus oils on the other hand should be used within one year.

We highly recommend that you use your essential oils within one year.

Essential oils should only be used if you have obtained good profiles with information on safety precautions.  Also please ensure that you have adequate ventilation when working with oils.

Here are a couple of safety guidelines;

  • Store out of the reach of children
  • Essential oils should never be taken orally
  • Avoid using oils in or around the eye area
  • Certain essential oils can cause skin irritation especially if they are applied directly to the skin undiluted
  • Citrus oils are phototoxic so avoid the sun
  • Some oils can cause skin sensitivity so try a patch test and vary the oils you use on a regular basis
  • Do not use essential oils during the first trimester of your pregnancy
  • If you have any medical condition please consult your doctor first before using an essential oil.
